New Place!

July 14, 2010

I’m sorry for the slump in writing. I’ve actually been in the process of trying to find a new venue for this blog. No offense to wordpress, but the lack of flexibility with the layout got me frustrated to say the least. Lo and behold I have decided to switch to blogger.

Come check out my new blog ‘Classic and Outrageous‘ version 2 : )

** I updated the link. Apparently it wasn’t working before. Sorry guys! **

Independence Day

July 4, 2010

I hope you’re all having a great fourth! The weather today was absolutely perfect! We lit some fireworks in front of the house then walked around the neighborhood to see others display their show. Since I live in Virginia, it’s illegal to have “shooting” fireworks. Yet that doesn’t stop millions of people from going up to PA to get some good ones.

I have to say, though, the best show I’ve seen by far was the community fireworks that went off last night. It’s sad to think that the homeowner dues that we pay monthly goes towards that rather than paving the road, but hey it’s America and we know how to celebrate in style even if it means driving down a bumpy road to get to the party.

What did you do this fourth of July?

A Day of Silence

July 1, 2010

Michael Cohen Marshall

Born in Dallas, TX on June 7, 2010, the first child of Megan and Brent Marshall, Michael Cohen Marshall came into the world at 7 lbs. 6 oz., with a hearty cry and a congenital heart condition. He was known as The Mighty Cohen in his short little life, for he endured multiple surgeries and procedures. For twelve days Cohen fought with the heart of a lion, but on June 18, 2010, his little body could not match his fighting spirit. He was delivered into the Kingdom of Heaven at 8:35pm in his parents’ arms. He was loved and adored by his parents, their families and friends every day of his life. Cohen touched thousands of lives with his story. The world came to know him through Megan’s blog and many felt they knew him long before he was even born. Sometimes the smallest feet leave the biggest footprints in this world and Cohen has left a lasting impression on us all; he was truly an amazing little boy. His parents want to thank all of his supporters, doctors, nurses and prayer warriors for their care, concern, support and prayers. Cohen is survived by his parents: Megan & Brent Marshall; Grandparents; Aunts; Uncles; and countless cousins, family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cohen Marshall Memorial Trust.

*Please participate in this day of silence for Cohen Marshall. He fought such a hard battle and I feel so very much for his parents. Go here or here to learn more.

The Panama Hat

June 30, 2010

The Panama hat is considered to be the best of the best in hats (this explains the $58 price tag that makes me hesitate getting one).  I’ve had my eye on this J Crew panama hat ever since they’ve started selling it, but I was curious about why it was called a “panama hat” and what made it so special.

The Panama is a brimmed hat that’s made from the toquilla straw plant. It’s origin is actually from Ecuador, but they are shipped to Panama before coming to the America’s, hence “Panama”. President “Teddy” Roosevelt increased the hats popularity when he visit the Panama Canal wearing one.

The hat is perfect for the summertime due to the fact that it’s light and breathable. It also makes a good travel hat because its able to keep it’s shape after being stuck in that small pocket of your suitcase.

The thing that most impressed me about the Panama hat is the fact that it has been a fashion statement since the 19th century. Although it’s not as popular as it once was, this hat is continually seen in the summertime. Talk about classic.

Overall, I think it’s a great purchase and one I will have to cough up the money to get. It’s a classy accessory that can be used many summers to come.

Eggs in Purgatory

June 25, 2010

Today, I decided to be spontaneous and cook something. I was really more in a baking mood but, because of my recent health kick, I decided to make these Italian egg sandwiches. The recipe is very simple and it took me about 5 minutes to prepare. I think it’s the perfect breakfast meal with a nice cold glass of orange juice.

You’ll Need:

- 2 teaspoons of olive oil

- 1 large egg

- salt and pepper

- 1 slice of rustic white bread (I used whole wheat bread from the bakery)

- 1 garlic clove

-1 tbsp of grated Parmesan

- 1/4 cup of tomato sauce (I used Classico fire roasted tomatoes and garlic)

Directions:

Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a heavy small skillet over medium heat. Crack the egg into the skillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover and cook until the white is firm and the yolk is almost set, about 4 minutes. Season with salt.

Meanwhile, toast the bread until golden brown. Rub the garlic over the toast. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Spoon the drained marinara sauce over the Parmesan. Top with the egg. Place the open-faced sandwich on a plate and serve.

Let me know if you try it out!

Inspiration of the Day

June 23, 2010

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new fils, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery-celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from-it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch

Just a little something i found on StumbeUpon. It’s a quote that will forever remain in my heart because I truly believe inspiration comes from all around us. Being creative doesn’t mean coming up with the “newest” thing, but honing in on everything around you and creating something unique out of it all.

It’s Root Root Root for the Home Team!

June 19, 2010

I have never been a huge fan of baseball, but I can honestly say that going to a baseball game never disappoints. I got the opportunity to go to a Washington Nationals game today thanks to the lovely people of Dulles South Church. My brother’s friend had a few extra tickets and next thing I knew I was getting ready to sweat the day away at Nationals Stadium.

Our journey started at 2 in the afternoon and we finished up around 8. It took about an hour and a half, thanks to traffic, to get to DC. Without AC. To say that it was blistering hot would be an understatement. High 95 Low 71. I want to say that it was actually hotter in that mini van than it was outside. I couldn’t imagine how bad it was going to be at the stadium.

Thankfully I didn’t have to. We were in the shaded area up in the nosebleed section of the stadium.   Pretty sweet! The only thing that freaked me out a tiny bit was how steep the seats were. I felt if I just leaned forward a little to far I was on my way down the field.

Overall, the trip was amazing. It would have been icing on the cake if I was able to catch a fly ball, but realistically that wasn’t going to happen.

Did you guys do anything fun this weekend?
